D9016 'Gordon Highlander', has had an uncertain future since its British Rail career ended in December 1981. The loco was originally bought from BR as a source of spares for 'Royal Scots Grey' by the D9000 Fund which later became Deltic 9000 Locomotives Ltd; however the loco was returned to use and appeared at various railways and events. Following an extensive overhaul, the loco saw a period back on the mainline in the infamous 'Porterbrook Purple' livery, before being restored to Two Tone Green at Toton prior to the demise of DNLL. Porterbrook sold the loco and another period of inactivity followed, being stored at Tyseley and Barrow Hill during which time a sale to Direct Rail Services was announced. After a further year out of use, D9016 was purchased by Beaver Sports, the proud owners of 55 022 'Royal Scots Grey', with which 'Gordon Highlander' has had a close connection for 50 Years.
With the recent talk of Deltics returning to mainline use, we believe that with our vast experience gained in operating 55 022 throughout the UK over the last 5 years. We are well placed to repeat our success and add to providing entertainment to the many thousands who have enjoyed 'Royal Scots Grey' in action, by restoring D9016 to the same high standards and helping keep the sight and sound of the Deltic locomotives alive on Network Rail metals.
We have started the process by returning the power unit to operation, restoring the body work,
overhauling many components and purchasing another Deltic marine engine from the U.S.A. There is
still a long way to go as OTMR - Data Recorder, TPWS - Train Protection Warning System, GSM-R
Communications and much other necessary equipment requires installation, along with the enormous
task of renovation to mainline standards and registering the loco for nationwide operation. This will
only be possible with your help and valued assistance, please help 'Gordon' to return to mainline
action by making a donation or setting up a standing order.
